Another Alpha Phi Delta fraternity update!

The spring semester is well underway here at SUNY Oneonta and Alpha Phi Delta has welcomed and initiated its newest members, the Nu Class. The Nu Class consists of Cameron Anderson, Matthew Cintorino, Taylor Galano, Oliver Gulian, Jimmy Oliva, Devon Seegers, and Joseph Sorel. They have learned a lot throughout the new member process and are now all proud to call themselves brothers of Alpha Phi Delta.

            In other news on March 10 Delta Rho as a whole went to Schoharie, New York and participated in flood relief efforts for the entire day. Brothers helped other relief workers with clean up and reconstruction efforts as the town is still recovering from having water as high as twelve feet from the flooding that occurred in the fall. The relief organizers were very thankful for our help and the day was a great success. We are also looking forward to Relay for Life coming up soon as we are constantly striving to improve our community service efforts.

Sigma Gamma Phi community service

Recently, the sisters of Sigma Gamma Phi have been busy with different community service events, as well as planning fun social events for the remainder of the semester. All semester, Sigma Gamma Phi sorority is involved in various activities in the community. There are always opportunities that arise that enable sorority members to become active members of the community. Recently, we held a babysitting night at a local church, where parents could bring their little ones for a few hours of fun. We had multiple rooms set up with different activities, in order to ensure that each child was occupied and having a good time. One room had puzzles and a movie playing, another had play-doh and snacks, and one room enough space for the kids to run around and play tag. The evening was fun for everyone, and sisters of the sorority enjoyed spending time with the kids. After a long stressful day of schoolwork, being able to act like a kid again was quite refreshing! The babysitting event was a success, and we can’t wait to do it again!

Sigma Gamma Phi is a local sorority, which means that there are several chapters that are all located in New York State. We have three other chapters located in Geneseo, Potsdam, and Fredonia. One of the benefits of being such a small sorority is that we are able to set up fun events with the other chapters, such as our Convocation. Convocation is put on every year, and all of the chapters get together and spend a weekend of fun together. The weekend is spent with tons of bonding sessions between the chapters where our traditions are shared, and we learn about the differences between the chapters that make each unique. Current Convocation chair, Jessica Samplaski, says, “Convocation weekend is a perfect example of bonding. It is a weekend of fun and sisterhood that we all look forward to each year.” Each chapter takes turns every year hosting the weekend. This year it is going to be at SUNY Geneseo and is going to be March 31st- April 1st. Samplaski, states, “Personally, I cannot wait for convocation! I look forward to spending the weekend with all of the sisters that I have met during previous convocation weekends and I absolutely love meeting all of the new members.” We are all quite excited to attend this upcoming weekend and we cannot wait to make lasting memories!

Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity Update!

            The newly charted Delta Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity at SUNY Oneonta inducted seven new brothers as of March 16th. The chapter and the fraternity as a whole would like to congratulate the Nu Class of the spring 2012 semester. Past National President, and current National Historian, Joseph Rahtelli II came out to Oneonta from his home in Connecticut to facilitate the Induction. Brother Joseph Rahtelli II has been with Delta Rho every step of the way thus far and his presence is often appreciated and looked forward to. The seven new brothers are Jimmy Oliva, Oliver Gulian, Cameron Anderson, Taylor Galano, Joe Sorel, Devon Seegers, and Matt Cintorino. All are freshman less Matt, who recently transferred into SUNY Oneonta. The fraternity now has 26 active brothers in just two years, with two brothers that have achieved alumni status.

The Nu class displayed a very strong sense of brotherhood during the new member process. Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity is confident the Nus will benefit both the community and the college, not to mention the organization itself both on the national level and within the Delta Rho chapter. The newly inducted brothers already showed they are eager to lend a helping hand.

On Saturday, March 10^th many of the brothers, and the Nu new member class, traveled to Schoharie to provide a cleanup effort from the damage still left behind by hurricane Irene. The group awoke early on Saturday and traveled an hour to Schoharie where a day’s work in swamp like devastation was accomplished. The guys dug up all sorts of objects washed away by Mother Nature.  They also broke up into groups and painted some portions of a house. The seven new brothers have a very promising future. It is clear they will work hard to be leaders and make the right choice.       

Rob Cruz - Phi Kappa Psi

This semester our fraternity is doing big things. One community service project we were involved with was the clean up of the Oneonta High School memorial garden. Another community service project we participated in was Punt Pass Kick. Punt Pass Kick is an event where we play football with little kids. We have completed over five hundred hours of community service hours collectively as a fraternity.

          Also this semester we initiated nine new brothers into our fraternity. The newest pledge class was named the Transcending Taus. These men have already proven that they will be a great addition to our chapter.

           The largest project we are involved with this semester is co-sponsoring a Hoodie Allen concert with Rage Productions. This concert will be November 5^th at the Oneonta Theatre. Hoodie Allen is a hip-hop and rap artist from Long Island, New York. For every ticket we sell as a fraternity, $1

will be donated to the Oneonta YMCA.

Britany Thomas - Lambda Theta Alpha

So this week we will be hosting the Malloween costume contest! It’s all very new and exciting for us! We can’t wait! Also, in November is our official Founder’s week! So fast a year has passed by! We are celebrating the week with a list of events ranging from educational programs to fundraisers for various organizations! We are all very excited and hope to see everyone at our events! George Lenz - Alpha Phi Delta

Welcome back to Alpha Phi Delta’s blog. Big news since the last post, we have now grown in numbers to 20 members!!! On October 17^th we proudly inducted our 6 newest members! I would like to congratulate Will Breen, Tyler Kuznia, Brian Tighe, Todd Connally, Clinton Fagan, and Todd  Baumgartner. We are proud to call the 6 young men our fellow Alpha Phi Delta brothers.  We also sold Broneonta state pinnes. These were very popular and people loved them! You can currently see them being worn on campus almost daily, although I’m sure that is changing now that Oneonta’s weather is showing it’s true face. Speaking of raising money, we will also be selling “nuts for nuts” bracelets in the near future, so be on the lookout for those. On October 27^th, our very own president the brilliant Pete Donaghy, put on an LGBTQ program. I would like to congratulate him on a successful event. Although I did not personally attend I heard it was quite and informative and well executed event. The following day on October 28^th, Our organization put together a mummy wrapping station at the Halloween carnival that occurred from 4-7.  Ryan Kelly said it was quite busy, and the children had a blast. In fact some of the children even requested to wrap the brothers. I did not attend this event personally because I was participating in Halloween in the halls. I passed out candy to all of the children who came by. I had a great time handing out candy to the children and they were very in spirit as they came around all dressed in their costumes. There was a mix of everything, from a jack in the box, to a monkey, to power rangers, and vampires. I would like to congratulate everyone from Matteson hall who did a wonderful job in putting this event together.  It was wonderful and very well executed. On Sunday October 30^th, Phi Sigma Sigma held a kidney walk.  Most of our brothers attended this event to support our fellow greek life and support the cause.  There were burgers and other food. It was a great event and I would like to congratulate Phi Sigma Sigma on all the money they raised, I hope we helped make a difference! I was one of the very few brothers who could not attend. Kim Chong - Sigma Gamma Phi

October has been a frantic, but very fun month here at SUNY Oneonta and especially for Sigma Gamma Phi! We are excited to have won the window painting contest and we are glad that our hard work has paid off! We also have six amazing new sisters and we recently had a very eventful Family Weekend where many of us were able to meet each other’s families. It was a fun weekend that ended with a dinner celebration at Stella Luna’s.

A few of us participated in the Mr. and Miss Oneonta Pageant by being judges and our very own Claire Connolly participated as Miss Sigma Gamma Phi. With multiple outfits and creative questions, it was very fun for all of us to watch as well as to be a part of. The beautiful Britany Thomas of Lamba Theta Alpha and handsome Travis Gardner of Phi Beta Sigma took the crowns of Mr. and Miss Oneonta.

In other exciting news – 5 of our sisters – Allison Clearwater, Kristen Maggio, Claire Connolly, Erin Fitzpatrick, and Jessica Samplaski have been initiated into Order of Omega which is a National Greek Honor Society that recognizes Greeks across campus who have achieved a high standard of leadership through activities within Greek life as well as outside of it.

Many of us have also participated in Order of Omega’s Halloween Carnival and Halloween in the Halls. The carnival was fun and we saw many children dressed in costumes! We provided candy and Halloween themed coloring pages. Between the carnival and walking children from building to building to trick or treat – we had a great time helping out!
