Spring 2013 Recruitment Week

Hello all!

Sorority and Fraternity Recruitment week is at full swing here at SUNY Oneonta. All of our chapters are attending the recruitment week activities and are having lots of fun meeting prospective students.

Our sororities are attending events such as Sorority Socials, Sorority Tea, and even a fun "How To" Craft Night in the Hunt Union Ballroom. You can find a schedule of events here on this blog or look around for a "Love Greek" Poster which is the sorority recruitment theme this semester. For any more information about recruitment you can contact the fantastic IGC Sorority Recruitment chair Riana Scott at scotrm65@suny.oneonta.edu or stop by the IGC office located on the third floor of Hunt Union.

Our Fraternitites this week are hosting many informationals, dinners, and even some pick up sports games can be found in the chase gym. The Greek Life office cannot wait to meet all of the potential new members at Bid Day this Friday at 3pm and are looking forward to an exciting new Spring semester to come!

Chi Upsilon Sigma "Founders Week"

This semester Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority Inc., held a program on HIV/AIDS awareness titled "Lifestyles", along with the Voices of Serenity Gospel Choir on campus. This event was held on Valentines Day, in order to help promote safe sex. We also recently did a collaboration with MSC and SCC called the Women's round table, in which we discussed some of the current on going issues involving females and how these issues are different from the issues women in the past had to deal with. The following week we held a Women's recognition Dinner, in which we cooked and helped recognize the hardworking women of our campus.

This week April 8th until April 12th, we have planned programs from Binge Drinking, KONY2012, and Don't Lose Control (Child Abuse) in order to help educate our campus on these current ongoing issues in our society. We look forward to having a successful week. :)

Phi Sigma Sigma "Fun Fun Fun"

For this semester Phi Sigma Sigma is proud to say we are off to a great start! We have had a very successful recruitment, receiving ten more new members.  We are so excited to initiate our new members into Phi Sigma Sigma. On Bid Day, it was clear that not only did we have a successful recruitment for our chapter, but every other organization did as well!  Everyone received an amazing group of new members for their organization and we were proud to be apart of that.

So far this semester we have been planning for a lot of upcoming events.  On March 6^th, Phi Sigma Sigma split us up into different groups.  Each group was a different country; we had to cook a traditional dish from a specific country and also presented background information about our country and our dish. My group was Italy. We cooked baked ziti to show how Italians strive off of simple dishes to show off the quality of those few ingredients. 

This year, we are introducing a new event to our campus, 90‘s Jeopardy. We have been tabling at Wilsbach and Mills dining halls to gain interested participants!  We are so excited for this event and hope to get a lot of people interested in it, as well. We are striving to raise money for our local philanthropy, the National Kidney Foundation. We are also preparing for our annual “Not-So-Talented-Talent-Show”, coming up later in the semester. We also plan to go to Binghamton to help with flood relief, some of our sisters went last semester and really enjoyed it!

Lambda Theta Alpha "Look Out for Events"

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. has been having a great semester. We are thankful and proud to say we are now a fully recognized organization at SUNY Oneonta. Recently we put on a program called "Breaking the Barriers". We were able to hear from Dr. Ibram Rogers. It was a great event! We also recently held a fundraiser for our national philanthropy, St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Several members attended the Greek Leadership conference in Rochester and were able to get a great new perspective on Greek life. We have been planning some upcoming events such as a walk in honor of our philanthropy, Love 146. We will also be having a program entitled, "I'm Just Not THAT Into YOU!". We have several other events planned throughout the semester and hope to see lots of new faces attending them! Congrats to everyone taking on a new class this semester. :)

Phi Kappa Psi "Busy Semester"

Phi Kappa Psi has been very busy this semester. We took a thirteen- man pledge class with very promising young men, determined to continue the Phi Kappa Psi tradition and reputation on and off campus. We already raised over $800 dollars with Sigma Gamma Phi at our 2nd Annual Diabetes Walk on February 19th. We have two teams ready to participate in, "Into the Streets" this May, and are also committing our time to Hurricane Relief, The Greater Oneonta Historical Society, a highway clean-up, and our long standing tradition of hosting security at OH- Fest.

Another Alpha Phi Delta fraternity update!

The spring semester is well underway here at SUNY Oneonta and Alpha Phi Delta has welcomed and initiated its newest members, the Nu Class. The Nu Class consists of Cameron Anderson, Matthew Cintorino, Taylor Galano, Oliver Gulian, Jimmy Oliva, Devon Seegers, and Joseph Sorel. They have learned a lot throughout the new member process and are now all proud to call themselves brothers of Alpha Phi Delta.

            In other news on March 10 Delta Rho as a whole went to Schoharie, New York and participated in flood relief efforts for the entire day. Brothers helped other relief workers with clean up and reconstruction efforts as the town is still recovering from having water as high as twelve feet from the flooding that occurred in the fall. The relief organizers were very thankful for our help and the day was a great success. We are also looking forward to Relay for Life coming up soon as we are constantly striving to improve our community service efforts.

Sigma Gamma Phi community service

Recently, the sisters of Sigma Gamma Phi have been busy with different community service events, as well as planning fun social events for the remainder of the semester. All semester, Sigma Gamma Phi sorority is involved in various activities in the community. There are always opportunities that arise that enable sorority members to become active members of the community. Recently, we held a babysitting night at a local church, where parents could bring their little ones for a few hours of fun. We had multiple rooms set up with different activities, in order to ensure that each child was occupied and having a good time. One room had puzzles and a movie playing, another had play-doh and snacks, and one room enough space for the kids to run around and play tag. The evening was fun for everyone, and sisters of the sorority enjoyed spending time with the kids. After a long stressful day of schoolwork, being able to act like a kid again was quite refreshing! The babysitting event was a success, and we can’t wait to do it again!

Sigma Gamma Phi is a local sorority, which means that there are several chapters that are all located in New York State. We have three other chapters located in Geneseo, Potsdam, and Fredonia. One of the benefits of being such a small sorority is that we are able to set up fun events with the other chapters, such as our Convocation. Convocation is put on every year, and all of the chapters get together and spend a weekend of fun together. The weekend is spent with tons of bonding sessions between the chapters where our traditions are shared, and we learn about the differences between the chapters that make each unique. Current Convocation chair, Jessica Samplaski, says, “Convocation weekend is a perfect example of bonding. It is a weekend of fun and sisterhood that we all look forward to each year.” Each chapter takes turns every year hosting the weekend. This year it is going to be at SUNY Geneseo and is going to be March 31st- April 1st. Samplaski, states, “Personally, I cannot wait for convocation! I look forward to spending the weekend with all of the sisters that I have met during previous convocation weekends and I absolutely love meeting all of the new members.” We are all quite excited to attend this upcoming weekend and we cannot wait to make lasting memories!
